Dr. Ibrahim Afzal has stated that current estimates show no sign of a big surge in COVID-19 infections.

Speaking during a press conference at the National Emergency Operation Center, Dr. Afzal noted that even though testing capacity has not been increased, there are other ways to identify a surge. As such, a surge would increase the amount of patients who consult at the flu clinic as well as those who are admitted.

The doctor also noted that during the lockdown a big surge is unexpected, but he did not rule out a surge completely and reiterated that a minor surge is still possible.

Doctors had previously noted that May 31 will be a peak for COVID-19 infections in the city. Dr. Sheena Moosa had previously revealed that as per statistics, about 1,600 people are expected to be infected on May 31 alone.

Dr. Sheena added that during the peak most cases would arise from households where many live together. As such she highlighted that cases from several households are now being identified as well.

While the total number of infections in the Maldives now stand at 982, four have died so far from COVID-19 with recoveries standing at 46.
