Assistant Commissioner of Police, Abdulla Fairoosh has said that quarantine facilities built as part of government efforts to control COVID-19 in the Maldives are not prisons and the citizens have to fulfill their responsibility.

While report of an escape from the quarantine facility at Canareef Resort in Addu City has surfaced, the Assistant Commissioner said that they neither prisons nor places guarded by walls.

The Assistant Commissioner Fairoosh further said that there is a responsibility of those being taken to the quarantine facilities and those going to quarantine willingly and requested that everyone fulfill their responsibilities.

He said that it does not mean that those who put others at risk would evade consequences of their actions.

Five people who escaped from Canareef Resort Quarantine has now been taken into the custody of the Maldives Police Service.

Police said that they are investigating further.
