The National Award Committee has stated that Ahmed Hishan was given the National Award in 2014, after necessary background checks with relevant authorities and upon confirmation of no criminal activity.

During a press conference held at the President's Office, Chair of the committee Aneesa Ahmed noted that each year the rules regarding the National Awards are published on the government gazzette. As per the rules, listed individuals for the award is checked for any criminal records through written documents from Maldives Police Service and the courts.

Aneesa revealed that Hishan underwent the same vetting process in 2014, and was awarded after the relevant authorities had provided written proof that he had no such criminal records or any accusations of such.

She also added that application for the award requires the submission of a police record as well. However, further information is sought after the shortlisting process since the submitted police record only covers five years.

Aneesa stressed that Hishan received the award not because of weak rules and regulations imposed by the committee. The President was advised to honor him with the award since all relevant authorities had confirmed that he did not have any criminal record.
