The Speaker of the Parliament and former President of the Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed has said that there were no waste in the Maldives in 1960s.
Speaking at the inauguration of a modern waste disposal center at Baa Atoll Maalhos yesterday, Nasheed, who is also the President of the main government party, MDP, said that the Maldivian people lived on what was produced on the island in the 1960s and and so there was no waste.
He said that the people could not get rid of the ready-made goods that were brought to the island and most of it became waste and began polluting the reefs and the beaches.
Nasheed also said that the attempts of waste management in Male’ City have been unsuccessful. However, the modern waste management system was developed in Maalhas because the people wanted it. And with the Island Council’s thinking in the same line as the people, such things can be achieved and MDP has provided that.
He said that MDP has empowered the councils with more authority and larger budgets so such projects can be conducted in all the islands.
