National security alert status lifted, resumed to normal state

The alert status raised by the Ministry of Defence the on 24 December 2019 has been resumed to normal.

The alert state was lifted this morning at 6 a.m. according to Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF). They expressed their gratitude to the public for the cooperation during the special operations across the country during the alert phase.

MNDF has previously said that national security alert was not raised due to an expecting threat but as a safety measure for the holiday season.

On 24 December, the Defence Ministry raised the alert level to Alert status Yellow-2 which is usually in effect when there is a threat or a warning of a coming threat of an event that could disrupt civil peace. The decision was met with heavy criticism from the public.
