President of PNC, the former MP for Fonadhoo constituency, Abdul Raheem Abdulla (Adurey) has said that the former President, Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom is not someone who has to be in any prison in the Maldives.
At a rally organized by the opposition coalition last night calling for the released of the former President after he was convicted of money laundering, Adurey said that the former President Yameen is in prison serving a political sentence and must be released for the sake of the country.
And of if the President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has even an ounce of love for the country, Adurey called on him to release the former President immediately.
He said that it is not President Yameen that is in jail but the Maldivian nationalism.
The unlawful imprisonment of President Yameen is a dangerous punishment according to Adurey, and he fears that the former President might be poisoned via food or an injection. Indicating to the government coalition, Adurey said that “they” want to separate President Yameen from Maldivian politics and would not hesitate to take his life.
Former President Yameen was convicted of money laundering by the Criminal Court on Wednesday and was sentenced to five years in prison along with a fine of USD five million. Since then, the opposition coalition of PPM and PNC has been protesting in the capital calling for his release.
