Authorities have seized 1.60 kg of illegal drugs being smuggled into the country via air.

Maldives Customs Service said that the drugs seized last October has an estimated street value of MVR 5.6 million.

The drugs were sized over two separate occasion from a Brazilian couple who swallowed the drugs to bring it into the country. Customs found 837.2 grams of drugs inside the 42-year-old man while 765.5 grams were found on the 29-year-old woman.

After suspicions of muling drugs inside their body, the drugs retrieved from them have tested positive for cocaine.

The custody of the drugs along with the suspects have now been transferred to the Maldives Police Service for further investigation.
