Indian Embassy in Maldives has confirmed that India will continue exporting onions to Maldives in spite of an onion shortage in India.
India is set to import 100,000 tons of onions, Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Ram Vilas Paswan said in a message on Twitter on Saturday, in a bid to curb rising prices.
State-owned trading firm MMTC Ltd. will import the onions so that they are available for distribution between Nov. 15 and Dec. 15, the minister said. State co-operative National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd. will supply them in the local market.
In relation to this, the Indian Embassy in Maldives said "India will continue exporting onions to Maldives in spite of importing 100,000 tons to meet severe onion shortages in India and spiralling prices."
Onion prices had recently spiked in the Maldives with a sack of onions going as high as MVR 1,000 and a kilo of onions going for MVR 70. The import of onions by STO however soon fixed the rates to normal.
