Maldives Police Service has said that 481 vehicles were issued traffic stickers for parking violations in the past week.
Statistics released by the Traffic Management Department of the Maldives Police Service released for the duration from 21-27 September 2019 show that 481 vehicles were fined through traffic stickers for parking violations accumulating MVR 120,250 in traffic fines.
In the same duration, 196 vehicles were stopped and checked and along with 40 people who does not have a driving licenses while 31 people were stopped for driving without their driving license.
The current government initially decided not to issue fines for parking violations without providing adequate parking space. However, with the increase of vehicle parking obstructing traffic, the government has resumed traffic fines.
Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, Aishath Nahula has previously said that police are issuing parking fines to vehicles obstructing the flow of the traffic. She said that stickers for parking violations are being issued to vehicles obstructing mosque entrances, those that are parked on the pavement, street corners and those that hinder parents and students near the schools along with those that obstruct entry to hospitals.
Police are also fining vehicles parked on double-lined areas.
