Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Aishath Nahula has paid a courtesy call on Malaysian Minister of Transport Loke Siew Fook where the two also discussed on signing an Agreement on Mutual Recognition.
It was revealed that the agreement between both countries will be signed very soon during the meeting which was held on the sidelines of the ICAO General Assembly in Montreal, Canada.
Minister Nahula revealed that under the agreement, Malaysian licenses will be accepted in the Maldives and vice versa.
Transport Ministry had previously revealed that they are working to get the Maldivian driver’s license to be accepted internationally.
With the changes brought to Malaysian Road Transportation Law, the country put a ban on usage of a foreign driving licence last January.
The Maldivian Embassy in Malaysia revealed following this that Maldivians can still drive in Malaysia by obtaining a driving license through a driving school in Malaysia. Those with an international license can still continue so without any added hassle.
The meeting also saw discussions about making aviation courses pursued by Maldivian students in Malaysia globally recognised. The Malaysian Minister also assured that more opportunities will be made available for Maldivians at the ATC training.
