Maldives Police Service has said that the former Vice President, Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Gafoor has violated his agreement with the state during the course of the investigation into the MMPRC Corruption Scandal.
The government revealed last night that the Prosecutor General’s Office had made an agreement with the former Vice President who is suspected of being the top of the MVR 1.3 billion embezzlement. And so, when Adeeb was brought before a judge at the Criminal Court last night, Police said that he had violated his agreement.
Adeeb had signed an agreement with the state admitting to his involvement and to support the investigation. In return, he would not be charged where he would get a sentence shorter than a certain amount.
The state has requested that Adeeb be in their custody since he had violated his agreement and there is reason to believe he would attempt to flee again.
Today, Adeeb’s lawyer, Mahfooz Saeed said that his client wants to continue the agreement and is ready to cooperate with the police investigation.
The former Vice President was brought back to the Maldives in the custody of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) on board the Coast Guard vessel “Huravee” around 10:30 p.m. last night before transferring custody and was brought to Male’ City on a vessel of the Maldives Police Service and made to appear at the court.
He was initially released from the court before being arrested hours later for leaving the country while his passport was withheld by the state.
Adeeb left the country on a Tugboat going to India. He was arrested before he could enter India after a member of the crew reported it to the Indian authorities which took the vessel into their custody. He was kept on the vessel guarded by Indian security until the Maldivian authorities arrived to take custody.
Prosecutor General, Aishath Bisham said that Adeeb would not have been able to flee the country if the Supreme Court granted the arrest warrant on 2 June in connection to the Maabinhura case.
