Milandhoo constituency PNC member Hassan Mufeed stated today that the e-petition submitted to Parliament—calling for the cancellation of the expensive health insurance allocated to MPs under the Parliament Privileges and Powers Act—was submitted to create political discord.
Speaking during the debate on the petition in the parliamentary session, Mufeed said that the claim presented—stating that MPs receive a massive insurance package that ordinary Maldivian citizens do not get—is baseless and untrue.
While discussions are raised about such security provided to MPs, the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) continues to fulfill public needs relative to the state's affordability and revenue, considering the capacity of the state for ordinary individuals.
In that regard, the member noted that the system arranged by NSPA for Maldivian citizens' insurance is much more convenient than that for MPs. He explained that health services under the MPs' insurance are obtained by traveling abroad at their own expense, spending on treatment, and subsequently submitting bills to get reimbursed.
MP Mufeed further stated that this petition is baseless and orchestrated behind the scenes by certain parties to stir up discord and turmoil.
