The hunger strike initiated yesterday morning at the police headquarters by a man named Mohamed Saeed is still ongoing. He began the strike close to 8:00 AM yesterday.
Saeed told 'One' today that Home Land Minister Ali Ihusaan visited and met with him late last night, giving assurance that the matter would be looked into.
"The minister came and met me late last night, which I greatly appreciate. But I want the assurance that this harassment will not happen again. I still haven't received that assurance," Saeed said.
Saeed stated that because of the harasser, his entire family's daily life has been disrupted to the point of becoming a psychological issue, and that his child is also being harassed and molested on the street.
Minister Ihusaan told 'One' today regarding this issue that the harasser was brought under police custody sometime yesterday and that his case is being investigated.
"He is currently under police custody. There are many things that need to be looked into in this matter. There are very difficult matters. There are also challenges within the law and regulations. He has been brought to the police various times. He was released at various times for various reasons," the minister said.
The minister stated that they had previously looked into taking him to Guraidhoo, but he did not meet the criteria for Guraidhoo because it was not proven that he is insane or has psychological issues of that magnitude. The minister also noted that he had escaped some other cases because there were no witnesses to testify against him.
"The state has official channels to investigate cases. There is a Prosecutor General and courts. I give the assurance that the police will play their role. But other institutions cannot give the assurance that the court or other places will rule this way or that way, right? However, we will do everything necessary to find a solution to the issue. I acknowledge that this is a matter that needs a solution," the minister said.
Saeed, who is conducting the hunger strike, said that although he struck inside the Henveiru police station starting yesterday morning, after being told at 9:00 last night that he could no longer stay there, he has been staying outside.
"They said that at night I cannot stay inside the police headquarters like that. That I must stay 500 meters away from the place, so I am measuring it and staying at that distance," Saeed said.
He said that relevant authorities must officially give assurance that this harassment will not occur again, and that this issue has been submitted many times without seeing any light at the end of the tunnel. Saeed also stated that he had to take to the streets and conduct a hunger strike because there was no other choice left.
According to a post published by Saeed on Facebook yesterday, he started this strike because an individual suspected of using drugs on Kashima Hingun and Doohimeri Magu has been harassing the public for a year and a half without institutions taking any action.
Saeed stated in the post that this individual named Ahmed Fairish has caused major disruptions to his family, area residents, and road users. He said that the man communicates with passersby using vulgar language, pulls motorcycles onto the street, and drags road closure boards to obstruct traffic.
In addition, garbage was dumped at the house where the complainant's family lives, which was recorded on camera twice, he said. Standing on the balcony, he threw oil and water at people passing by, including spraying oil on the complainant, the post noted. He is also accused of throwing plastic bottles at people without warning, shouting, and making noise continuously from midnight until dawn. Furthermore, he has sneaked into the building behind people entering it multiple times, the post stated.
Saeed said that relevant authorities have been reported to, the case submitted, and evidence provided regarding these issues. However, he noted that no changes have occurred over the past year and a half, and institutions have failed to protect his family. Therefore, he stated that he will end this hunger strike, started for his family's safety, only when the government and relevant authorities provide a solution to this issue. He requests that safety be ensured for his family and all users of those streets.
Regarding this, Police Spokesperson Ahmed Shiyam told 'One' yesterday that cases against the individual involved in harassment had been submitted previously as well, and that he is a person with mental health issues. Shiyam also assured that within legal bounds, the police will work to find solutions to the difficulties faced by the hunger striker and his family at the police headquarters.
Fairish, accused of harassment in this case, is someone whom police also arrested in February of this year over a death threat case. In addition, he has a criminal record.
