Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla has questioned former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s opposition to the Rasmalé development project, highlighting what he described as a contrast with the MDP’s efforts to stop a Saudi-funded project during Yameen’s presidency.
In a post on X, Abdul Raheem asked Yameen to explain the difference between the MDP’s opposition to the project in Faafu Atoll during his administration and his current cooperation with the MDP in opposing the Rasmalé project.
He also questioned Yameen’s previous criticism of the MDP for betraying the country and its people, asking whether similar concerns applied to his current actions.
Abdul Raheem expressed confidence that the Rasmalé project would proceed under President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, saying it would be implemented in accordance with the Constitution and Maldivian laws and would benefit future generations.
The Government signed a commercial agreement with UAE-based Eagle Hills last month to develop the 500-hectare Rasmalé site under the USD 20 billion Maldives Waterfront and Marina project. The Government has stated that the project is expected to generate USD 11 billion in revenue for the State over 10 years.
