It has been learned that the person driving the motorcycle carrying three people in the serious collision between two motorcycles in Hulhumalé was someone who had been released from police custody before his remand period expired.

Ahmed Uwais (H. Laamiya) was driving the motorcycle carrying three people against traffic in Hulhumalé Phase 2 on Wednesday night when it collided with another motorcycle as they attempted to flee from the police.

He is the individual recently arrested by police on suspicion of making payments to a guesthouse by sending fake payment slips.

According to the Criminal Court remand order issued on the 1st of this month, Ahmed Uweis was arrested in connection with a fraud case. The Criminal Court had ordered him to be remanded for 15 days on that day, with his detention period scheduled to expire on October 16.

When questioned regarding his release, police stated that he was freed before the expiry of his remand period because the portion of the investigation requiring him to be held in custody had been completed. They noted he was released last Tuesday.

According to the court order remanding Uwais, he has an extensive criminal record. The court order stated that the reason he needed to be kept in detention was because releasing him would pose a danger to public safety.

Uwais was also previously arrested on suspicion of assaulting a woman in a Hiyaa flat apartment. Furthermore, he was arrested and remanded for 15 days in a case involving helping a person under police custody to escape.

A total of five people were injured in this Hulhumalé accident. Among them, four are in serious condition, and two are receiving treatment on ventilators.
