President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that work is ongoing to formulate a national-level mental health policy and a mental health law.
He made these remarks in a message shared on social media today in connection with World Mental Health Day. In the message, President Muizzu stated that mental health services are being integrated into public health services, regional and specialist care systems are being strengthened, and tele-mental health and emergency care systems are being developed.
He noted that efforts will be made to further strengthen the Maldives' mental health system and build an accessible and fair system for citizens. He added that this work will be carried out based on the consultation and participation of individuals who have experienced mental health difficulties, in alignment with public needs.
The President stated that his government's aim is to prioritize the prevention of mental health issues, early detection, and treatment, ensure easy access to high-quality healthcare, and build a compassionate, mutually supportive society. To achieve this goal, work is underway to bring about policies and legislative amendments under the Mental Health Strategic Action Plan formulated for 2025 to 2029, he added.
