Health Minister Geela Ali has stated that negative perceptions and labels deeply rooted in society regarding mental illnesses must be completely erased, and that a loving, compassionate, and safe environment must be established for individuals struggling with mental health issues.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the community color run held yesterday as part of activities in K. Kaashidhoo marking this year's World Mental Health Day, the Minister noted that it is important for every individual to share their experiences regarding mental well-being. The Minister also stated that true assistance cannot be provided to those suffering in loneliness and sorrow unless we listen to their voices.
Highlighting this year's World Mental Health Day slogan, "Listen to the Voice of Experience: Real Voice, Real Change," the Minister stated that the slogan reminds us that mental well-being must not remain merely as policies written on paper.
"This is the time for us to listen to those voices and respond to those situations. The negative perceptions and labels deeply rooted in society regarding mental illnesses must be completely erased," the Minister said.
The Minister noted that building a safe environment that prioritizes love, compassion, and care for one another is an important individual and national responsibility resting on everyone's shoulders today. Paying attention to mental well-being is not just someone's individual task, but everyone's shared responsibility, she added.
World Mental Health Day is observed on October 10th. This year's commemorative activities are being held in K. Kaashidhoo.
