The Ministry of Finance has stated that MVR 1.8 billion has been disbursed to councils as block grants during the first 8 months of this year.

This year marks the highest budget ever allocated in Maldivian history for block grants to councils. A total of MVR 2.4 billion has been allocated for council grants in this year's budget.

According to the Weekly Fiscal Development Report released by the Ministry of Finance, MVR 1.8 billion was disbursed as council grants during the first 8 months of this year. This represents a 12% increase compared to the MVR 1.6 billion disbursed as block grants during the same period last year.

While MVR 2.4 billion was allocated for council grants in this year's budget, in 2023—though MVR 2.1 billion was budgeted—an additional MVR 8 million was spent. Furthermore, MVR 2.2 billion was disbursed to councils the year prior.

When distributing funds to councils, city councils receive the largest amounts. Among these, the largest budget is assigned to the Malé City Council. Since 2020, funds have been disbursed to councils as "block grants" under a fiscal formula determined based on state revenue.
