Parliament has been asked to investigate the release on parole of a man serving a 25-year prison sentence for drug trafficking.
The request was submitted by MDP Galolhu Uthuru MP Mohamed Ibrahim (Kudoo), seeking an investigation by the relevant parliamentary committee.
Abdulla Ibrahim, known as Abucha, 25, was sentenced to 25 years in prison after being convicted in a case involving the importation of more than 80 kilogrammes of drugs. He was released on parole on 1 October but was returned to prison yesterday.
Homeland Security Minister Ali Ihusaan announced yesterday that all members of the Parole Board had been dismissed in connection with the case.
Kudoo has called for an investigation into the procedures followed in granting the parole, including the legal basis for the decision, the Parole Board’s voting process and whether proper procedures were followed.
He has also called for an investigation by the Anti-Corruption Commission and police into possible abuse of influence or authority, and for previous parole decisions to be reviewed to determine whether similar cases occurred.
The request also calls for clarification on the legal procedure for re-arresting a person after release on parole without a court order or new administrative decision.
