PNC member for Feydhoo South constituency, Ibrahim Didi, has stated that financial declarations and accountability should not be required exclusively from members of the People's Majlis.
MP Ibrahim Didi made these remarks while speaking during the debate on the Proceeds of Crime Bill, which was submitted to today's Majlis session by government-backed Fuvahmulah Central MP Ali Fazad. The MP stated that among the objectives of this bill is opening opportunities for Maldivian citizens to earn lawful income.
Noting that various individuals possess large amounts of money through unknown means, the MP said that a significant number of youths suddenly become wealthy without engaging in any work or employment, which points to the illicit diversion of state or private assets. Therefore, he asserted that all citizens in the Maldives should be accountable for the property and wealth they acquire, and financial declarations should not be mandatory solely for members of parliament.
The MP highlighted that some individuals attain sudden wealth—multiples beyond their salaries and without running any businesses—and emphasized the need to investigate whether such assets are acquired through drug trafficking or gang activities.
He added that such scrutiny must apply regardless of whether an individual is a parliamentarian, a minister, or even the President, expressing regret that such cases have historically not been properly investigated whether individuals remain in office or after they depart.
