The Government plans to introduce special bus services for school students and office workers travelling between Malé and Hulhumalé to ease traffic congestion, Transport and Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed has said.
Speaking on the eighth episode of the ‘Ahaa’ forum, jointly organised by the President’s Office and PSM, Saeed said the services would operate at designated times, connecting the Phase 2 Hiyaa area with Velana International Airport and the Green Zone in Malé.
The Minister said the Government was also working with schools and parents to introduce school-friendly bus services, including dedicated trips between Malé and Hulhumalé during peak hours.
He said the initiative aims to reduce congestion on the Sinamalé Bridge, where heavy traffic volumes have caused delays.
The services will operate under the Greater Malé Transport and Mobility Office, established under the newly ratified Land Transport Act.
Saeed added that a national road safety strategy, a Road Safety Council and an advisory committee would be established within the next six months. A police-operated Traffic Management Centre will also be set up to strengthen traffic management in the Greater Malé area.
He said the new measures are expected to deliver significant improvements to traffic conditions in Malé over the next three years.
