Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has stated that statements made by MDP Chairperson and former President Mohamed Nasheed do not materialize into reality, and that the opposition MDP is not making adequate efforts to hold the current government accountable.
Speaking at a People's National Front (PNF) meeting held last night in Addu City's Feydhoo while criticizing President Nasheed's administration, Yameen stated that while Nasheed is a figure who speaks on various matters, those words do not translate into reality. He also noted that under the guise of democracy, that administration arbitrarily arrested individuals, describing Nasheed's version of democracy as "empty noise."
Furthermore, Yameen stated that during the presidencies of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and former President Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik, unfulfillable promises were not made, and they successfully earned the public's trust.
Regarding former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration, Yameen stated that during the two and a half years available to develop the country following the COVID-19 pandemic, no major developments significantly impacting the public's daily life were accomplished. However, Yameen claimed that he fulfilled the promises made during his own presidency and did not go before the public to speak of things that could not be achieved.
Commentating on the current political landscape, Yameen stated that the public has grown weary of political leaders. Yameen alleged that political leaders aligned with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu work for personal gain and are not standing on the side of the public, adding that citizens believe President Muizzu's leadership has not brought beneficial outcomes.
Yameen pointed out that the MDP, operating as the strongest opposition party in the Maldives, is failing to make adequate efforts to hold the government accountable. He noted that MDP's past protests and vigor are no longer visible, and actions such as approaching the Anti-Corruption Commission over corruption issues are absent. While individual MDP members raise their voices in the People's Majlis, Yameen remarked that the party as a whole is not seen working in unison, and he called upon MDP leaders to stand with the public and hold the government accountable.
