Crown Company Chairperson Hussain Afeef (Champa Afeef) has stated that the government's plan to build 10 resorts that distribute profits to every citizen will bring another major transformation to the Maldives' tourism sector.
Speaking at a ceremony held last night to mark National Tourism Day, Afeef noted that developing the 10 resorts as announced by the government and distributing their profits to Maldivians will be a development that brings another major shift to the industry. He stated that this project will ensure the participation of all Maldivians in advancing and developing tourism, adding that it is an initiative they look forward to greatly and hope will succeed.
This initiative traces back to February, when President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu delivered the Presidential Address at the opening of the People's Majlis. At the time, the President announced that through a state-owned company, at least ten resorts will be developed over the next three years, with a major share of the profits deposited directly into the bank accounts of every Maldivian citizen. The President stated that legislation will be enacted to ensure every Maldivian holding a national identity card is an equal shareholder in all the resorts developed under the project, marking the first time in history that every citizen becomes a direct financial beneficiary and shareholder of Maldivian tourism.
The President further detailed that funds are estimated to begin depositing into citizens' accounts starting in 2030, with calculations indicating an average annual minimum of 400 US dollars per citizen. For instance, a family of five members would see each individual holding shares in at least ten resorts, yielding a minimum of 2,000 US dollars annually for the household. The President concluded by affirming that all necessary efforts to bring these plans to fruition are proceeding at a swift pace.
