In a statement released today announcing that stern actions have begun against individuals who repeatedly drive recklessly on the streets in a manner that causes fear among the general public, the Maldives Police Service stated that under this effort, reckless vehicles will be impounded, and action will be taken against both the driver and the owner of the vehicle.

Furthermore, the vehicles will be brought under police custody for a period of 30 days, and vehicles not claimed by the owner within the stipulated period will be destroyed in accordance with established procedures.

Additionally, noting that employees of government institutions and companies have been observed participating in such acts, the police stated that relevant information is being shared with those institutions to take available administrative measures against them. The police service also stated that the identities of repeat offenders among reckless drivers will be made public, and that necessary legal actions will be taken after verifying the authenticity of information such as photos and videos shared by the public.

The Maldives Police Service reiterated that individuals who repeatedly drive recklessly in a manner that induces fear among the general public will face criminal investigations without further warning.

"We wish to state that after summoning such individuals and advising them, if these actions are repeated, criminal investigations will be conducted without further warning, in addition to the standard fines previously imposed under traffic laws and regulations," the police stated.

Furthermore, the police noted that special attention and strict measures will be directed toward specific dangerous behaviors, including zigzag driving, operating vehicles with modified loud exhaust silencers, skidding on hard surfaces, speeding past speed breakers, unauthorized street racing and stunt driving, dangerous overtaking, driving under the influence, and fleeing or attempting to evade police when signaled to stop.
