The Islamic University of Maldives (IUM) has held a panel discussion on the enforcement of laws addressing domestic violence, focusing on challenges and gaps between legislation and practice.

The discussion, titled Domestic Violence Law and Enforcement: Gaps Between Law and Practice, was organised by IUM’s Kuliyyah of Shariah and Law and the IUM Law Society. It was held at the university’s auditorium at 8pm yesterday.

The panel featured Family Court Judge Maeesha Yoosuf Sameera, Senior Public Prosecutor Aminath Shahaama, Family Protection Authority Legal and Policy Director Khadeeja Areesha, and Maldives Police Service Inspector of Police Hassan Shareef. IUM student Fathimath Saniha Mohamed moderated the session.

The discussion covered challenges in reporting domestic violence, investigations, prosecution and court proceedings, as well as measures to protect victims. Panellists also highlighted the importance of stronger coordination among relevant institutions in addressing domestic violence cases.
