Minister of Arts, Culture and Heritage Heena Waleed has called for national interests to take precedence over political differences in discussions about the USD 20 billion Rasmalé project.

In a post on X, Heena responded to criticism of the project by former President Abdulla Yameen, saying that the investment by UAE-based Eagle Hills could generate more revenue for the Government than the existing tourism sector.

She cited the country’s 179 resorts, 16 hotels, 920 guesthouses and 165 safari vessels, which have a combined investment of USD 13.7 billion. Heena also cautioned that spreading misinformation about major investments could undermine investor confidence.

The Minister said the project would safeguard national sovereignty and Maldivian interests, adding that it was protected by relevant legal frameworks. She urged political leaders to prioritise the country’s interests over personal or political differences.

The Rasmalé project involves developing a waterfront city and marina on 500 hectares of reclaimed land, to be leased to Eagle Hills for 99 years.
