Maldives Customs has seized over 8 million cigarettes smuggled into the Maldives.

These items were seized from a shipment brought into the Maldives by sea.

In a post on X, Customs stated that during a special operation conducted at the Malé Commercial Harbour on the 27th of this month, a large quantity of hidden cigarettes was discovered while inspecting a shipment declared as "general cargo."

Accordingly, Customs stated that a total of 8,527,480 cigarette sticks were found, amounting to 426,374 packs.

Customs stated that the items have been brought under customs custody.

Customs also stated that the matter is being further investigated.

Previously on multiple occasions, Customs has intercepted and seized cigarettes attempted to be smuggled into the Maldives.
