A Nepalese woman and man who smuggled drugs into the Maldives by swallowing them have been arrested and remanded in custody.

Arrested on suspicion of importing, smuggling, and trafficking drugs into the Maldives are 40-year-old Itrani Gale and 47-year-old Nikka Tamang, both nationals of Nepal.

When the two individuals were brought before the Criminal Court yesterday to determine their remand status, the court deemed them a threat to society and remanded them in custody for three days.

According to the court order, both individuals smuggled a large quantity of drugs into the Maldives by swallowing them.

The court order noted that because the two individuals are currently admitted and receiving treatment at a healthcare facility, they were not physically presented at the remand hearing.

Police have gathered sufficient evidence against them in this case, which includes statements from police officers who responded to the scene and a customs case submission form.
