Land has been allocated in Malé to construct a dedicated building for the Supreme Court, providing a permanent solution to the space constraints facing the court.

Speaking at a ceremony held last night to mark the 18th anniversary of the Supreme Court, Chief Justice Abdul Ghanee Mohamed stated that space limitations are currently the greatest challenge facing the judiciary. Noting that ensuring justice is delivered to the public as swiftly as possible is a fundamental responsibility, the Chief Justice said that efforts are underway to identify and resolve administrative and systemic obstacles to expedite cases that have been pending in Maldivian courts for over a year.

Highlighting the government's ongoing efforts to resolve court space limitations, the Chief Justice stated that the construction of the Malé Court Complex was awarded to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) in July of last year. He added that the land required for the project was officially allocated on the 8th of this month.

The Chief Justice also stated that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's aim is to commence the foundational work for the new building in 2028.

Recalling the history of the court's locations, the Chief Justice noted that following the operation of the transitional Supreme Court in Mulee'aage during the republican era, the court has since been operating out of Theemuge. Although both locations are grand edifices, he remarked that neither was designed to function as a judicial court, presenting numerous logistical and operational challenges.

Concluding his remarks, the Chief Justice emphasized that the newly acquired land is a vital milestone in realizing the Supreme Court's long-term vision, adding that the new facility will provide a conducive and efficient environment for judges, staff, and citizens seeking judicial services.
