The Criminal Court has extended the detention of a 29-year-old man arrested in connection with the alleged trafficking of more than 17kg of drugs into the Maldives by an additional 15 days.

The suspect, identified as Azhadh Naseem, was remanded for 15 days on 8 September. He was presented before the court again yesterday, with the court extending his detention by another 15 days, citing concerns that he could pose a risk to the community.

Police submitted evidence including search reports, statements from officers and investigators, evidence relating to drug-related equipment, and an intelligence report.

The court order states that Azhadh is believed to have been involved in drug trafficking on a large scale and has a previous record related to drug trafficking. The order also noted similarities between the alleged offence and previous cases against him.

Azhadh denied links to the drugs in court, claiming they were found at a neighbouring house and that he was not on the island at the time.

Police are continuing their investigation.
