The Criminal Court has cancelled tomorrow’s hearing in the money laundering and bribery case against former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom over the leasing of R. Fuggiri.

The hearing was cancelled after the Prosecutor General’s Office requested a postponement, citing health concerns among state prosecutors.

The case involves allegations that Yameen received a USD 1 million bribe in connection with the leasing of Fuggiri and subsequently laundered the money. The evidentiary stage has concluded, with proceedings currently at the stage of submissions concerning the evidence and witnesses.

Yameen is also facing charges in the Vaavu R. Atoll case. A hearing in that case has been scheduled for next week.

The High Court previously overturned Yameen’s 11-year prison sentence in the R. Atoll case and ordered the Criminal Court to rehear the case. The Supreme Court has also ruled that newly submitted evidence in the case cannot be admitted, with proceedings at the Criminal Court stayed pending a further decision by the Supreme Court.
