The Criminal Court has sentenced an individual to life imprisonment and a MVR 500,000 fine after finding him guilty of cannabis use and trafficking.

The ruling was issued against Ishfag Waheed of G. Sundars.

The state pressed two charges against him after police recovered a large quantity of cannabis, a scale typically used for weighing narcotics, and a container used for packaging drugs from his room at the Sundars residence where he was living.

For the charge of cannabis use, Ishfag was sentenced to three years in prison. Additionally, upon conviction for cannabis trafficking, the court handed down a life sentence along with a MVR 500,000 Rufiyaa, ordering him to settle the payment with the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) within 12 months.

Furthermore, the court ordered the forfeiture of cash seized by police from the premises—specifically MVR 7,000, 1,690 US Dollars, and MVR 86,000—ruling that the funds were acquired through criminal activity and must be handed over to the state.
