President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said modern emergency alert systems will be introduced in existing and newly developed housing to improve safety for persons with disabilities.

Speaking on Rayyithunge Adu, a hearing-impaired couple raised concerns about being unable to receive timely warnings during emergencies such as fires. They also highlighted difficulties in accessing emergency assistance and communicating with teachers about their three children.

The President said the Government would work to equip newly developed flats with systems that allow persons with disabilities to receive emergency alerts.

He also said lower-floor apartments are already being prioritised for persons requiring special assistance under Government housing projects, and that greater efforts would be made to ensure safer and more accessible living conditions in existing buildings.
