Hearings in two corruption cases filed by the state against former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom have been scheduled at the Criminal Court later this month, following a lengthy interruption.

The hearing in the R. Fuggiri case is scheduled for 23 September, while a hearing in the V. Aarah case is set for 29 September.

Both cases allege that Yameen accepted bribes and laundered the proceeds in connection with leases of islands through MMPRC.

The Fuggiri case had been stalled after the state appealed to the Supreme Court against a High Court ruling concerning evidence submitted by the prosecution. The Supreme Court upheld the High Court ruling in July, finding that the evidence subsequently submitted by the state could not be considered.

In the Fuggiri case, proceedings will now continue only against Yameen after the Criminal Court previously acquitted two Sun Siyam companies of the charges.

The state has also withdrawn the case against Ahmed Rizaa.
