A resolution requesting that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu be awarded the People's National Congress (PNC) presidential ticket as the party's candidate for the upcoming 2028 presidential election without holding a presidential primary was submitted to the PNC High Council and passed today.
This resolution was presented to today's session of the PNC High Council by Abdulla Ibrahim, a general member of the party.
In presenting the resolution, he stated that since President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu assumed office, he has safeguarded the independence and sovereignty of the Maldives and ensured that no foreign military presence remains on Maldivian soil. He also highlighted that the President has enhanced the nation's maritime surveillance capabilities and is implementing robust reformist measures to address the country's financial difficulties and debt issues without causing hardship to the citizens.
Furthermore, he noted the diversification of the economy, the introduction of modern technological resources such as "Digital Maldives 2.0," the implementation of massive projects like Rasmalé to resolve the severe housing crisis, and the President's ongoing advocacy on the international stage for the rights of the oppressed people of Palestine.
The resolution he submitted stated that, in accordance with Article 88 of the PNC's foundational charter, if a party member holding the office of President wishes to contest for a second term, they shall receive the ticket without holding a primary.
"Considering that granting a second presidential term to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu is a national duty for the long-term future, welfare, and benefit of the Maldivian nation and all its citizens, I submit that the PNC High Council formulate this resolution to formally invite him on behalf of all party members to contest for his second presidential term in the 2028 presidential election, and I propose that this High Council pass this resolution," stated the resolution submitted by Abdulla Ibrahim.
After presenting this resolution, he requested the members to vote and pass the resolution to invite President Dr. Muizzu to contest for a second term in the 2028 presidential election.
During the debate on the resolution, all speakers fully supported the resolution.
During the debate, Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef stated that the primary reason President Muizzu must be given a second term is due to his ongoing efforts to maintain the independence of the country.
In the brief interval after concluding the debate on the resolution and before taking a vote, Speaker of the People's Majlis and PNC Chairperson Abdul Raheem Abdulla stated that securing a second term for President Muizzu is the most important task of the High Council.
The vote on the resolution submitted by Abdulla Ibrahim to award the presidential ticket to President Muizzu without a primary was taken by a show of hands. The resolution was passed unanimously by the 1,119 members present.
