South Hulhumalé MP Dr Ahmed Shamheed has announced his candidacy for the Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) presidential primary.
Shamheed announced his decision in a podcast launched for his campaign, saying he entered the race to bring about positive change in the Maldives.
His candidacy adds to an increasingly competitive MDP primary. Former MDP President Abdulla Shahid, former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and former MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail have also announced their intention to contest the party’s presidential ticket.
Supporters of former President Mohamed Nasheed have also called on him to enter the race.
Shamheed previously served as Minister of Transport and Communication under former President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan and held senior positions in the Jumhooree Party.
