Regulations have been amended to prohibit foreign nationals entering the Maldives on Business Visas and Special Visas from converting to work visas while remaining in the country.
The regulation, gazetted by the Ministry of Homeland Security, has taken effect starting today.
The ministry stated that while business visas are originally intended for bringing individuals to the Maldives for short-term business purposes, authorities have noted that some parties are misusing the visa. Specifically, individuals have been brought in on business visas to expedite the acquisition of work permits before converting their status.
Following this regulatory amendment, all employers have been notified that individuals currently on business and special visas can no longer apply for work permits through the Xpat system.
Additionally, the Ministry of Homeland Security has advised anyone seeking further information regarding the change to contact the ministry's hotline at 1485 or email [email protected].
