Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who arrived in the Maldives on an invitation from President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, has been accorded an official welcome.

Anwar arrived in the Maldives last night. Upon his arrival at Velana International Airport (VIA), he was welcomed by President Muizzu, and the Maldivian military accorded him a guard of honor.

Traveling by launch to Malé this morning, Anwar was welcomed at the Official Jetty by President Muizzu. He was subsequently greeted with cultural performances by school students.

Following these performances, a gun salute was given by the Maldivian military, and the military band played the national anthems of Malaysia and the Maldives at Republic Square.

Walking down the red carpet, Anwar exchanged greetings with Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef and cabinet ministers before proceeding to the President's Office. Upon arrival, he signed the visitor's book for dignitaries.

Anwar's two-day visit is his first trip to the Maldives since assuming office as Prime Minister in November 2022.

The President's Office stated on the 11th of this month that Anwar's visit is in response to an invitation extended by President Muizzu during his official visit to Malaysia in April 2025.

The primary objective of the visit is to further strengthen the longstanding friendship between the two countries, the President's Office noted. Official discussions between the top leaders of both nations will focus on expanding cooperation across various sectors and international arenas.

Important agreements will also be signed to elevate bilateral relations to new heights, according to the President's Office.

During the visit, Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef, Speaker of the People's Majlis Abdul Raheem Abdulla, and Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam are scheduled to pay courtesy calls on the Malaysian Prime Minister.

Diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Malaysia have now reached 58 years.
