Adverse weather conditions are expected to continue across the Maldives today, prompting the issuance of a countrywide white alert.

With rainy weather having persisted since last Thursday, the national meteorological authority, the Maldives Meteorological Service (Met Office), forecasts that the wet conditions will continue until next Wednesday.

In connection with the prevailing weather, the Met Office issued a white alert for the entire country today. Highlighting expectations of heavy rain, thunderstorms, and winds gusting up to 40 miles per hour during squalls, the alert was in effect from 9:30 AM to 2:00 PM today.

Addu City’s Feydhoo has sustained the most severe damage from the downpours. Over 70 houses in Feydhoo experienced flooding, with conditions in one home deteriorating to the extent that basic daily necessities were disrupted and the dwelling became uninhabitable, prompting the relocation of its residents to a temporary shelter. Furthermore, flooding was reported in two houses in Addu City's Maradhoo.

In addition to Addu City, continuous rain has affected Fuvahmulah City, Gaafu Alifu Atoll, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, and several islands in the central Maldives. Notably, heavy rainfall in Fuvahmulah caused widespread flooding across large areas of the island.

As this period coincides with the school mid-term holidays, the Met Office has urged the public to monitor weather conditions closely and exercise caution when undertaking travel.
