Dr Furgaan Ibrahim has received the inaugural Engineers Award for Engineer of the Year in recognition of his contributions to the engineering field.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu attended the award ceremony held last night.

The awards were introduced by the Government to recognise the important role engineers play in national development, encourage young people to pursue engineering and promote environmentally friendly innovation.

Dr Furgaan, who has more than 20 years of experience in engineering, energy, administration and research, currently works at MWSC. He also received the Engineering Innovation, Technology, Education and Research Award.

Eight other awards were presented in various categories. Recipients included Muhammad Zidan Hassan, who won the Young Engineer Award; Asraar, who received the Women in Engineering Award; and Hussain Jaushan, who won the Student Innovator Award.

Lifetime Achievement and Consultancy Firm awards were also presented.

MWSC received two company awards: the Sustainability Champion Award for its decarbonised seawater desalination system using renewable energy and NAS batteries, and the Community Impact Award for its Integrated Utility Services project in R. Dhuvaafaru.
