The Ministry of Heritage has decided to conduct numerous activities to celebrate the 900th anniversary of the Maldives converting to Islam.

Speaking on PSM News’ "Raajje Miadhu" program last night, Deputy Minister at the ministry, Aiminath Ibrahim, stated that these activities are planned to be distributed across all atolls in a manner that allows people of all age groups to participate.

The Ministry of Heritage states that information regarding the theme of the day will be provided during the official ceremony held to mark the 900th anniversary of the Maldives converting to Islam, and live programs as well as podcasts related to the occasion will be broadcased across all channels.

Goal: Sustainably protecting the Islamic heritage of the Maldives, promoting Islamic arts and academic research, strengthening ties with the international Islamic Ummah, and reinforcing Islamic faith and religious unity among future generations.

Activities distributed across different times of the year:

  1. Work on creating a 900-year monument (in collaboration with relevant authorities and various associations). It will be placed in the Malé area as a permanent memorial representing the occasion of the Maldives converting to Islam.
  2. Work on an Islamic History Museum Gallery of the Maldives to preserve, revive, and promote ancient manuscripts and historical heritage.
  3. Visibility enhancement efforts are scheduled to be carried out by the Heritage Ministry to inform Maldivians and visitors to the Maldives that 900 years have passed since the Maldives converted to Islam.

Activities and events:

  • An international Islamic trade fair.
  • A national Quran recitation festival to increase the love for the Quran in the hearts of children and youth.
  • A national Islamic academic quiz competition.
  • Sports competitions under the name Islamic Solidarity Games Maldives Edition.
  • An Islamic calligraphy festival exhibition.
  • An Islamic film festival conducted with the objective of delivering Islamic history and culture to the public through film media.
  • A religious symposium held at the atoll level.
  • A conference featuring youth participation where high-quality papers will be prepared and presented for the Islamic symposium. Under this, the papers presented through Islamic scholars at the Islamic conference will be discussed.
  • An Islamic heritage camp for youth/programs aimed at providing paths to progress in a modern way while staying true to Islam, with the objective of teaching Islamic upbringing and good manners to the youth.
  • A photo book of Maldivian mosques / Maldivian Islamic structures and the architecture of coral stone mosques will be documented and published.
  • A competition on utilizing Maldivian Islamic designs in construction / showcasing Islamic drawings and stone carving work.
