The Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission has reminded broadcasters that callers must be clearly informed that their phone calls or interviews are being broadcast live.

In a statement issued today, the Commission urged media organisations, journalists and media workers to fully comply with relevant laws, regulations and professional standards.

The reminder follows a live programme on Raajje TV in which the station’s Head of Programmes and Coordination, Aamir Saleem, called a STELCO HR hotline and asked questions. A STELCO employee who answered the call was subsequently suspended over remarks made during the broadcast.

The Commission stressed that media workers must uphold standards relating to obtaining information in the public interest, verifying its accuracy, and protecting personal information and sources.

It also urged media organisations to exercise particular caution when using recordings or information obtained without the knowledge or consent of the person concerned.

The Commission called on all media outlets to respect individuals’ privacy, dignity and rights while maintaining professional and legal standards.
