President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said the Government will only acquire land under the authority of city and island councils for development projects, following amendments to the Decentralisation Act.

The amendment was approved today after being proposed by Thulhaadhoo MP Abdul Hannan.

The President said some councils have delayed the allocation of land needed for Government development projects, resulting in significant delays.

He said the amended law establishes procedures that must be followed before land can be acquired, including publicly announcing details of the proposed project and seeking public feedback.

Councils will also be given an opportunity to consult relevant Government agencies before land is acquired.

The President added that if councils or other parties have made investments on the land, the law provides for compensation. He stressed that all procedures must be completed before land can be taken under the new provisions.
