A child who was undergoing treatment for serious injuries sustained in a road accident in Hulhumalé has passed away.
The nine-year-old girl injured in the collision last Saturday died late last night.
The accident occurred near Vinares flat 7 on Hithigas Magu in Hulhumalé Phase 2 around 9:04 PM on Saturday night.
Police stated that a review of CCTV footage from the area indicated the incident occurred when a motorcycle traveling along Hithigas Magu struck a pedestrian walking roadside to board a car parked near Vinares 7.
According to police, the collision resulted in injuries to an 18-year-old Maldivian woman driving the motorcycle and a nine-year-old Maldivian girl riding on the back. While both were hospitalized for treatment, the hospital reported that the nine-year-old child was in critical condition. Police noted that the person driving the motorcycle held a valid driving license for that vehicle category.
It is understood that the accident involved a collision between a car and the motorcycle.
Reports indicate that the child sustained severe head lacerations and multiple injuries in the crash. After receiving initial medical attention at Hulhumalé Hospital, she was transferred to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), where she was placed on ventilator support.
Police are continuing their investigation into the case and have towed two cars to collect evidence.
