With 99 percent of the Maldives comprising ocean territory, the country should be able to produce sufficient energy to meet its needs by utilizing the sea, the President has stated.

Speaking on the President's Office program "The Pulse" last night, the President emphasized the importance of developing the research sector in the Maldives. He stated that conducting renewable energy research is crucial, whether at the level of domestic universities or by facilitating international universities to conduct studies in the country.

"We need to start encouraging research in the Maldives. Research needs to be conducted, both at the university level and through international universities visiting the Maldives, especially toward sustainable development, particularly across renewable energy. When explored, the possibilities will become clear. The Maldives is 99 percent ocean. By utilizing the ocean and using the sea, we should be able to generate all the energy we need," the President said.

The President stated there should be no reason why this cannot be accomplished. Noting that solar energy can be easily generated in the Maldives, he highlighted that the government has set a target to ensure 33 percent of the country’s energy consumption comes from solar power by 2028.

However, he emphasized that efforts must not remain confined solely to solar power, affirming that priority will also be given to other renewable energy sectors.
