The People’s Majlis has approved the appointment of Shammoon Hameed (K. Meenaaz) as a member of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM).

Shammoon’s nomination was passed with 57 votes in favor out of the 60 members present during the sitting.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu had forwarded two nominations to the Majlis for the HRCM vacancy. Alongside Shammoon, the president nominated incumbent commission member Samaau Ahmed Najeeb (Asey, GDh. Thinadhoo).

The Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights and Gender had reviewed and approved both individuals as competent and qualified for the post.

The vacancy arose as Samaau Ahmed Najeeb’s current term on the commission is set to expire on October 3.
