The Maldives has welcomed the decision to remove Syria from the United States' State Sponsors of Terrorism list.

In a press statement issued today, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the US decision, noting that it will provide vital support for Syria’s development, economic progress, and reconstruction.

The ministry affirmed that the Maldives continues to stand in support of an independent, secure, and peaceful Syria.

The United States originally placed Syria on its State Sponsors of Terrorism list in the late 1970s over allegations of aiding Palestinian militant groups.

Syria's 14-year civil war came to an end in December 2024 after forces led by Ahmed al-Sharaa toppled the regime of dictator Bashar al-Assad and established a new government.

Syria has been officially declared a war zone under Maldivian regulations, with al-Sharaa’s former group, the Nusra Front, having previously been designated a terrorist organization by the Maldivian government.
