Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed has assured that no employee will be dismissed from their job for political reasons or through unfair treatment.

Speaking at a press meeting at the President’s Office today, Saeed said the Government is reviewing employees at state-owned companies to determine whether they can be better utilised.

He said the previous administration had appointed a large number of political appointees to some companies, while President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s administration is committed to ensuring that no one is treated unfairly.

Saeed also highlighted the Government’s debt repayments during its first two years in office. He said the previous administrations of Presidents Abdulla Yameen and Ibrahim Mohamed Solih repaid USD 191 million and USD 428 million respectively during their first two years, while the current administration has repaid between USD 1.29 billion and USD 1.3 billion.

He said the current administration inherited a difficult economic situation, with large government expenditure and major projects that did not generate revenue. The Government is now working to address these issues and put public finances in order.

Saeed added that efforts are also under way to address issues in the dollar market and tackle businesses operating in foreign currency without the required licences.
