President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has ratified the 2nd Amendment to the Utility Regulatory Authority Act.

The amendment, passed by the People’s Majlis on 17 August 2026, introduces changes to strengthen the administrative governance of the Utility Regulatory Authority (URA).

Under the amendment, the URA Board of Directors will increase from five to seven members, including the Chief Executive appointed by the President. A legal professional must also be appointed to the Board.

The amendment sets out new procedures for appointing Board members, eligibility criteria, terms of office and the conduct of Board meetings.

The additional Board members must be appointed within 30 days of the amended Act coming into force.

The amended Act came into force following ratification by the President and publication in the Government Gazette.
