An Indian woman has been arrested at Velana International Airport (VIA) for attempting to smuggle a large quantity of illicit narcotics into the Maldives. The suspect, identified as 29-year-old Indian national Alice Mike Baramhan, arrived on an IndiGo flight.
Customs officers flagged her luggage with a red sticker, and subsequent X-ray screening revealed bottles containing suspected substances. Chemical analysis confirmed the bottles held 2,450 grams (2.45 kg) of Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and Cannabinol (CBN).
During her remand hearing yesterday morning, the Criminal Court remanded the suspect in custody for 30 days, citing public safety concerns. Evidence submitted by the police included statements from Customs and investigating officers, drug test results, and chat logs retrieved from her mobile phone. The investigation is ongoing.
